Activity Overview

The Virginia Living Museum The focus of this museum is on plants and animals that are indigenous to Virginia, including bats, fish, wolves, otters, cave dwellers, alligators, and birds just to name a few. The Living Museum offers extensive displays and habitats that span both indoors and outdoors. Things to Do

  • Explore exhibits that depict the various regions of Virginia. View the animals indigenous to the state of Virginia in various habitats and participate in hands on activities in the Discovery Displays. Some areas to see are Coastal Plains, Mountain Cove, Virginia Underground, Cypress Swamp, and After Dark exhibits.
  • Venture out to the more natural habitats outdoors as you meander along the elevated boardwalk through the gardens and habitats of the living inhabitants. You will see more than 250 species of animals and over 450 species of plants that are Native to the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Visit the Abbitt Plantetarium's full screen projections system to get a simulation of what it is like to enter a black whole, see the stars and galaxies around us or study the Earth from outer space.
