Activity Overview

First launched in 1943, the USS Pampanito is a World War II Submarine that toured the Pacific 6 times during the 1940's.

The ship is now a museum located at Fisherman's Wharf in San Diego. Visitors are welcome and encouraged to take a self guided tour of the boat and explore the conditions which many sailors endured during their time spent in service.

Things to See & Do

The USS Pampanito offers self guided audio tours which will guide you through the various parts of the boat and explain the significance of each.

The submarine is located at the Fisherman's Wharf, within reasonable walking distance from the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, which includes a museum, library, and other opportunities to explore maritime history.

Former sailors are sometimes on board to add insight into life on a submarine, and are more than willing to answer your questions.

USS Pampanito Insider Tips

  • Navigation of the ship requires travel through steep passages and narrow spaces. This activity is not appropriate for young children or visitors who may be unsteady when walking or on ladders.
  • Wearing layers is strongly recommended due to the unpredictable weather.
  • Look for a Groupon for discounted admissions.
  • All admission costs serve the restoration and maintenance of the ship.
