Activity Overview

One of the most spectacular natural wonders you can see in the United States, the Tuckaleechee Caverns can be the perfect choice for a fun and educational weekend out with the family. The Tuckaleechee Caverns were first opened to the public in 1931 and since then they have become one of the most popular attractions in the area of Townsend.

The Tuckaleechee Caverns are located in an area that was inhabited by Cherokee Indians since the middle of the 19th century. The caverns are spectacular and offer kids the opportunity to learn more about caves and what stalagmites and stalactites are.

Things to Do

  • Have a close look at the crystal clear stream that flows through the entire length of the caverns. The stream surfaces from a small Alpine cove.
  • Do not miss the Totem Pole, which is a 12-foot stalagmite in the Big Room.
  • The Palette is one of the most spectacular and unusual formations in the Tuckaleechee Caverns. The formation gets its name from its resemblance to a palette an artist would use.

Tuckaleechee Caverns Insider Tips

  • Even though the Tuckaleechee Caverns are open to everyone, they may not be a suitable choice for children under 10 because of the slippery floor and low light.
  • You can take a guided tour of the Tuckaleechee Caverns, which lasts for approximately 1.5 hours.
  • The Tuckaleechee Caverns is an attraction open 7 days a week.
