Activity Overview

Established in the early 1990's, the Philadelphia Insectarium provides hours of delight for children who have the chance to observe a tank of glow-in-the-dark scorpions, a collection of exotic butterflies, a working beehive, some hissing cockroaches, and so much more.

Two floors of live and preserved insects along with various exhibits, quiz boards and hands-on activities offer a morning or afternoon of fun for kids of all ages.

Things to Do With Kids

  • Don't miss the insect feeding session which takes place Monday through Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
  • Inspect the Cockroach Kitchen and learn what food attracts these pests.
  • Sample some Cricket Lick-It Taffy, a Barbecued Baby Beetle or a Chocolate Covered Mealworm.

The Philadelphia Insectarium Insider Tips

  • Ninety-minute tours are available for groups of 15 or more at a cost of $8 per person (free for children under 2). Group tours should be booked early in the day.
  • Small groups can try for a walk-in tour anytime between 10:00 and 4:00 Monday through Saturday, but the availability of a museum educator cannot be guaranteed.
