Activity Overview

A National Historic Landmark completed in 1768, the Johnson House provided shelter for three generations of a family that acted as abolitionists in the days of slavery. Underground railroad activities were said to be conducted at this location, along with meetings of freedom fighters, and hiding of runaway slaves in the attic.

Things to See & Do

  • See artifacts from the slavery era such as ankle shackles and collars.
  • Check the calendar for history lectures, art shows and other programs.
  • Damage from muskets and cannonballs fired during the Revolutionary War can still be seen on this historic home's exterior.

  • Open by appointment Monday to Wednesday.
  • Tours provided Saturdays year round at 1:15, 2:15 and 3:15.
  • Children can learn about the exhibits through quizzes provided upon entry.
