Activity Overview
The House of The Seven Gables was built in 1668 by Salem sea captain John Turner. The name of the place may ring a bell as this place was made famous by author Nathaniel Hawthorne who wrote a book with the same title. The architecture of the house and the antique furniture inside has been preserved through the efforts of Caroline Emmerton and her non-profit organization. The government has designated this place as a National Historic Landmark District.
Things to Do
- Explore the rooms inside the House of the Seven Gables and listen to the tour guide as he recounts the history of the town of Salem, the house, and its occupants.
- Visit other old houses in the site: The Retire Becket House, Hooper-Hathaway House, Nathaniel Hawthorne's Birthplace, Phippen House, and the Counting House. Also, don't miss the magnificent garden right in front of the sea.
- Attend lectures and book-signing events of local and best-selling authors every Wednesday night.
- Participate in the Legacy of the Hanging Judge, a theatrical reenactment of the Salem Witch Trials, or watch a performance of The Spirit of the Gables. Check the schedule on their website.
- Have a look at the current exhibition at the Seamans' Visitor Center and buy Nathaniel Hawthorne memorabilia, books, jewelry, clothing, and other trinkets at the Museum Store.
The House of the Seven Gables Insider Tips
- Get a dollar discount if you are an AAA member.
- The tour is often full with educational and group tours. Go during off-season if you want to avoid the crowd.
- Persons with disability or with claustrophobia might find it hard to go around the house especially in exploring the hidden staircase.
- Taking photos and videos is not allowed inside the houses.
