Activity Overview
Founded in 1929, the Heard Museum champions the history and culture of the American Indian people through personal stories and creative art. The museum has existing partnerships with American Indian artists to portray authentic illustrations and provide perspectives from the Native people.
Things to Do
- Learn about the tradition of Native people at the HOME: Native People in the Southwest regular exhibit. The section displays paintings, jewelries, textiles, pottery, Hopi katsina dolls, a full-sized Navajo hogan, and a 21-foot mural/portrait of the Yaqui people.
- Be in awe by the genius of American Indian sculptors displayed in The Third Dimension: Sculptural Stories in Stone and Bronze exhibit area.
- Explore the changing exhibits that usually feature work from notable American Indian artists depicting the life of Native people through different media.
- Encourage kids to participate in the workshop to make your trip more interactive. Hands-on activities include Zuni Jewelry coloring activity, creating butterflies and dragonflies, making your own saddle bag, and cradleboard doll-wrapping.
- Visit the museum's gift shop. It's a little version of what you'll see inside the museum and you can purchase authentic Native American memorabilia too! Choose souvenirs from a range of items such as katsina dolls, beaded and silver jewelries, shirts, children's toys, and books.
The Heard Museum Insider Tips
- Children ages 5 years old and younger get in for free.
- Free public guided tours are available daily at 2PM and 3PM.
