Activity Overview
Opened in 1859, the Tennessee State Capitol has been named a National Historic Landmark. With the building's Greek Revival architectural style adorned with ornate carvings, the Capitol serves a great stop for families touring Tennessee. Notice that the building is topped with a copula instead of the usual dome. The capitol houses the Governor's office, the Senate and the House of Representatives chambers.
Things to Do
- Join a guided tour of the Capitol scheduled from Monday to Friday at certain hours. Check the schedule here. Most reviews recommend joining a guided tour because the guides provide more fun facts but in case you can't make it, you may also get brochures and go on a self-guided tour. Going on your own pace also works best if you want to take photos.
- Aside from exploring inside the building, go around the grounds and see the different statues located outside the building. You will also find the graves of James Polk, president from Tennessee, and his wife.
- After a tour of the capitol, go for a walk and grab snacks from the Bicentennial Park located across the capitol.
