Activity Overview

Tecumseh is outdoor theatre at its best. A show that combines a thrilling story with historically accurate details you will be entertained and educated during a night here. The show depicts the life of Tecumseh the legendary Native American leader of the Shawnee tribe. Growing up during the American Revolutionary War and exposed to the hardships imposed on the Native American peoples from birth Tecumseh dreamed of a land where the indigenous peoples of America could live freely. To gain this he created a confederacy of Native American tribes and sided with the British. During the war of 1812 he enjoyed some success but was eventually killed by the Americans scattering his dreams of a free land for the Native Americans.

Things to Do

  • Sit back and take in this incredible production that takes place in the wonderful setting of the 1,800 seat outdoor Sugarloaf Mountain Amphitheatre. Since it started in 1973 this play has been seen by a staggering 2.5 million people. The show is obviously entertaining if it keeps drawing in those crowds but it also strives for realism too. To achieve this aim the production uses real horses and live military cannon.
  • If you really want to get an in-depth experience you should sign up for the behind the scenes tour. With a cast member as your guide you will get an amazing insight into all aspects of the production and get to see how stuntmen pull off their incredible stunts!

Tecumseh! Insider Tips

  • People sometimes complain that they cannot hear all the dialogue. This is because the performance is not miced-up as to do so may remove some of the realism from the act and also because it is difficult to install a proper sound system into an outdoor amphitheater. If you think you may need help with hearing everything you should request one of the hard of hearing aids that the theatre can provide. Though the seats are comfortable you could think about bringing a stadium seat cushion for the little bit of extra comfort!
  • Parking is free for those at the performance.
  • The play is not recommended for children under six due to a couple of violent moments.
