Activity Overview

One charming, fun and seriously cheap way to see a lot of New Orleans is to take a ride on one of the city's street cars. Of the few lines that snake their way through the city's neighborhoods the St. Charles line is certainly the most famous. It is the oldest continuously running streetcar in history and serves as a symbol of the city's rich history and culture.

Things to Do

  • The St. Charles Streetcar runs for over 13 miles through many of New Orleans' principal districts. The cars themselves ooze an old world style and are still decked out with wooden seats and brass fittings as they have been for many years. This is not just some tourist attraction either, the city's Regional Transit Authority operate it as an essential part of the city's public transport. So taking a ride means you will be travelling with the locals as you pass through New Orleans' charming streets.
  • Once you have had a ride along the St. Charles line be sure to try out the other lines. The Canal Street Line travels for five and a half miles through the Central Business District leaving you at the New Orleans Museum of Art. The Riverfront Line runs alongside the Mississippi while the Loyola line connects the bus and train station with the city center.

St. Charles Streetcar Insider Tips

  • If you are visiting you can grab and all day pass for all the streetcar lines for $3 or a three day pass for $9. It's a bargain and a great way to take in the city as the locals do.
