Activity Overview

The Speed Art Museum and Art Sparks, Kentucky's largest art institution, is undergoing a $50 million expansion to be completed in 2016. In the meantime, visitors can explore Local Speed, the museum's satellite space, which runs family art activities and events, special exhibitions and permanent exhibits.

At present, Local Speed is featuring contemporary artists from New Orleans, Stephen Paul Day and Sibylle Peretti, along with works from Leonard and Adele Leight's collection. Prior exhibits have included the following: Discovering the Earth, We'll wear a Jolly Crown, Welcome Neighbors:Art from Nulu, and more.

Things to Do

  • Take a free tour of the gallery, offered Fridays and Saturdays between noon and 3:00 p.m.
  • Reflect on the submissions to the "Before I Die" wall, the brainchild of an artist and urban planner whose close friend died, inspiring her to create a wall on which individuals could pick up chalk and share their thoughts on life yet to be lived. The Louisville wall is one of 300 around the world in 20 different languages.
  • Take part in the free family art activities held frequently, including an earring workshop, quilting, making holiday ornaments and greeting cards, etc.

Speed Art Museum Insider Tips
