Activity Overview
The Science Museum of Western Virginia is the first science museum of its kind in the Commonwealth of Virginia and was established in 1970 by a small group of teachers and volunteers. Over the last few decades, the museum has expanded exponentially to include a multitude of hands on learning exhibits and and with its continual growth has the potential to become a state of the art Science Center.
Things to Do
- Check out the Healthy Earth exhibit and explore the geological finds and specimens native to Virginia.
- Engage in the Mind games at the Healthy bodies exhibit and view the plasticized parts of the human skeleton.
- Enter the Open Lab and perform dozens of science experiments of your choosing.
- Become enthralled in the Butterfly Conservatory. Watch these specimens from all over the globe flutter and land on native plants and even museum guests.
Science Museum of Western Virginia Insider Tips
- The museum seems in need of funding. Some renovations have taken place recently but if you are looking for a planetarium experience, please note that the museum recently closed that exhibit because the equipment within it was so outdated.
- Keep checking back for the planetarium though as they are trying to launch a campaign to bring the technology up to day in the near future.
- Many of the exhibits are closed or out of order throughout the museum.
- In addition to the hefty admission fee, several of the other museum activities are a la cart and pay as you go.
- On a brighter note, the museum is making positive changes and updates, so keep checking back. There are more exhibits being influxed since our visit.
