Activity Overview
The Salato Wildlife Education Center is a public area maintained by the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources. It is an area of green spaces & lakes found in Frankfort, Kentucky, around 40 minutes northwest from Lexington.
Things to Do
- See the wildlife - there are two areas where you can discover animals: the outside area houses a black bear, bisons, bald eagles, elks, and more, while the inside area houses alligator snapping turtles, and other reptiles.
- See the exhibits - there are stuffed animals in the inside exhibit area which show how nature is being exploited through the loss of habitat, and also some other informational exhibits about various ecosystems in the area. It is a great way for the kids to learn more about the environment and how they can help preserve what we have in their own way.
- Hike - two trails are in the area: the Pea Ridge Loop Trail is 2.41 - 3.17 miles, depending where you started your hike, while the Habitrek Trail is less than 1 mile, great for average hikers.
- Fish - it's free if you have a Kentucky fishing license, although if your kids are below 16 years old, they do not need the fishing license.
- Have a picnic - With nature all around you, who can say no to a lovely picnic with the family? Pack up everyone's favorite sandwiches and get everyone outside!
Selato Wildlife Education Center Insider Tips
- If you have been to the wildlife center a few years back (early 2000s), you may have noticed that they have started charging admission to the center. This is to help maintain the facilities and keep it running.
- The place is small(ish) but you can also spend a couple of hours exploring the area.
