Activity Overview
Featuring close to 100,000 works of art, The Rhode Island School of Design Museum preserves objects from varying cultures and time periods for the appreciation and interpretation of its visitors. Found throughout the museum are costumes, decorative arts, paintings, photographs, sculptures and textiles.
Several contemporary exhibits often rotate through the museum as well, for example: What Nerve! Alternative Figures in American Art, 1960 to the Present; UuDam Tran Nguyen: Waltz of the Machine Equestrians; and Circus: Prints, Drawings and Photographs.
Things to Do
- Use your mobile device to access the museum's new audio program that features perspectives on certain museum objects from dozens of artists, designers, students and scholars.
- Sketch one of the many works of art using pencil only.
- Permanent galleries are dedicated to Decorative Arts and Design, and Costume and Textile and also to art from Europe, Asia, Ancient Greece and Ancient Egypt.
RISD Museum Insider Tips
- Admission is free every Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on the third Thursday evening of each month from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
- Reduced price for college students with valid ID.
- A museum cafeteria offers sandwiches, drinks and snacks.
