Activity Overview

Before the California Gold Rush North Carolina served as the epicentre of the United States gold industry. This was where the first documented discovery of gold was found. Today it is a National Historic Landmark that is free for the public to visit. Come tour the site and hear about its long history. See the machines and equipment used to mine during the 1800's and even pan for gold yourself!

Things to Do

  • You can begin your self-guided tour at the Visitor's Centre. Here you will not only find out about the history of the Reed Gold Mine, named after the Reed family who first discovered gold in the area, but there are also a number of exhibits all about gold itself, its geology and how it has been mined throughout history. There is also a film about North Carolina's gold industry.
  • The rest of the site includes the underground tunnels where men used to work and a stamp mill which displays machinery and equipment from the old days. Guided tours are available for both of these areas. There are plenty of trails and outdoor exhibits to enjoy also.
  • You can pan for gold yourself from April 1st until October 31st at a fee of $3 per pan. Have a try; this could be your chance to strike it rich!
