Activity Overview
Since its opening in 1977, the Providence Children’s Museum has delighted thousands of young ones with its interactive and fun exhibits designed primarily for children ages 1-11.
Some of the museum's exhibits enjoyed by youngsters include Play Power in which objects are sent flying through air tubes and magnetic mazes are constructed; The Climber which allows for children to scale a two-story high maze; Strings Attached where children can play with marionettes and learn about two Rhode Island-based puppet masters; and Underland where they can mimic the lives of roots, worms and moles.
Things to Do
- Observe and possibly participate in a 20-minute performance about either reducing, reusing and recycling or Jack and the Beanstalk. Shows go on at numerous times throughout the day.
- Take preschoolers to hear the open-ended story hour.
- Drop into the Museum's art and science exploration area and create your own masterpiece or science experiment using natural or recycled materials, such as fabrics, paper, clay, water, and slime.
Providence Children's Museum Insider Tips
- Visitors 4 and under have an area dedicated just to them called Littlewoods.
- The museum is open certain Friday evenings until 8:00 p.m. and is free on those days from 5:00 p.m. forward.
- The museum's free parking lot fills up on busier days, and then metered parking can be found on surrounding streets.
- Umbrella strollers are available, and the museum asks visitors to leave larger strollers behind.
- There is no cafeteria at the museum. Visitors may pack a lunch or visit one of the nearby restaurants with kids' menus.
