Activity Overview
In 1891, a band of retired and active firemen formed the Portland Veteran Fireman's Association, a social organization which also sought to preserve a modest collection of firefighting artifacts and memorabilia. Over time, their collection broadened due to the generosity of many patrons.
The collection eventually moved to the former fireman's quarters of Engine 4 on Spring Street in Portland and became known as the Portland Fire Museum. The museum's displays, which are continually being revamped and improved, include such articles as lithographs, badges, flags, banners and much more.
Things to Do
- Families will enjoy inspecting such old-fashioned equipment as original horse stalls, a hand tub and reel from 1848, hand pumpers from the mid 1800's, and machinery from the 1909 Fire Alarm Office.
- Learn about an original alarm panel from Engine 4, complete with gongs and a phone.
- Kids will appreciate the old slide poles, helmets, and additional gear and relics.
Portland Fire Museum Insider Tips
- The museum is open on the first Friday of each month as part of Portland's First Friday Art Walk.
- Donations are welcome to help preserve the artifacts.
