Activity Overview

Plum Creek in Walnut Grove is a 205 acre park established in 1969. The Redwoods County site was also once the home of Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the original series of Little House On The Prairie books. Laura's childhood memories of the site and its surroundings were the primary inspiration for many of the stories and visitors can still come and see where the Ingall's old family dugout used to stand.

Things to Do

  • The current owners of the land, the Gordon family, still make the site accessible to the general public between the months of May and October. The family have left the site of the historic Ingalls home exactly as they found it when they purchased the land in 1947. All that remains now of the Ingall's time spent here is an unusual depression in the land where their dugout once stood. You can see this and also explore the creek and surrounding area itself, much of which will feel familiar for fans of Little House On The Prairie.
  • You can learn more about the Ingalls family at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum. The museum houses memorabilia from stars of the Little House On The Prairie television show, a large doll collection with dolls dating back to the 1870's and objects typical from the time when Ingalls where residents at Plum Creek.
  • If your family likes the outdoors and wants more time to appreciate this beautiful and historic part of Minnesota then consider staying a few nights at one of the 70 campsites made available at the Plum Creek Park. Reservations are taken for June, July and August, you can rent a tent from $20.00 and there is a minimum stay of 2 nights.
