Activity Overview
Created in 1962 essentially by a group of amateurs the Phoenix Zoo hopes to connect visitors with the world of nature and in doing so grow a love and respect for all animals and creatures the world over in the hearts of all its guests. Today it is home to around 1,400 animals some of whom are endangered and are looked after as part of the Zoo's extensive global and local conservation program.
Things to Do
- You can see in the animal exhibits that the Zoo takes pride in trying to enrich their existence while they live in what is for them an unnatural setting. This means trying to give the animals plenty of physical and mental stimulation to keep fit, intelligent and confident. This applies for all the creatures living at the Phoenix Zoo which includes among its population Asian Elephants, White Rhinoceros, Mexican Grey Wolves, Galapagos Tortoise, Masai Giraffe, Sumatran Tiger, African Lion and many many more.
- Phoenix Zoo offers some great programs for families and children. Their Farm Tots Program is designed for those toddlers between 18 months and two years. Through free-play and activities it passes on the basics of how to respect animals to the young learners.
- The Wild Science Academy is designed for children between the ages of five and thirteen. The Academy turns the Zoo into a classroom with two hour classes filled with animal interactions and laboratory investigations.
Phoenix Zoo Insider Tips
- Check out the Zoo Map which is also available as you enter the park.
- Children aged two and under are allowed in for free. There are also discounts for military, students and seniors.
- It is best to bring plenty of sunscreen and hats especially for younger children when you visit the Zoo.
