Home to ships, aircraft and a submarine that all saw combat combat in different wars fought by the United States the Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum is not just your typical war museum; this is about as close you can get to the real thing.
Things to Do
- Without doubt the highlight of this trip is the chance to step aboard the USS Yorktown. This aircraft carrier nicknamed "The Fighting Lady" saw combat in World War II and Vietnam and was also the ship that picked up the Apollo 8 astronauts and their capsule in 1968.
- You can also visit the destroyer USS Laffey which fought at D-Day and during the Korean War, and the submarine USS Clamagore, a designated National Historic Landmark.
- While you are here make sure you catch the Medal Of Honor Museum which can be found aboard the USS Yorktown. This museum explains the importance of this distinction and recounts the stories of some of the exceptionally brave servicemen who have earned it over the years.
- You can also visit the Vietnam Naval Support Base Camp which sets out an Advanced Tactical Support Base exactly as it would have been during the Vietnam War complete with real helicopters and gunships.
- On the grounds of the Museum there is also a memorial to the personnel who served aboard submarines during the Cold War.
- You can conduct a self-guided tour with one of the audio tours available for rent. These audio tours contain about 3 1/2 hours of content with over 100 points of interest which you can visit and learn about at your own pace.
Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum Insider Tips
- There is a discount for military personnel who bring their ID, however if they arrive in uniform they are allowed entrance for free. Children under 6 years of age are also granted entry for free.
- The USS Yorktown is wheelchair accessible though given its limited size the submarine USS Clamagore may pose problems for the physically handicapped.
