Activity Overview

Create a spectacular woven tapestry when you learn how to use paper plates to weave. This craft is fun and incredibly user friendly that with only a little bit of help getting started and tying off color changes, even an older toddler can master it.

Enjoy this great quiet time activity that is also great for fine motor skill development and building hand strength. Having five children in wide range of ages, I love how this craft appeals to them all.

Materials Needed

  • Two sturdy paper plates
  • Yarn
  • Scissors
  • Large sewing needle

How to Do It

  1. Take two paper plates and glue them together to make your paper plate loom a bit more sturdy.
  2. Use scissors to cut little notches into the rim of the plate and continue evenly all around the plate.
  3. Now loop some yarn across the plate, anchoring it in each of the notches.
  4. Next, thread a plastic needle with the yarn color of your choice.
  5. Knot the end of your yarn around one of the strands in the center of your web and start weaving up and down around the circle of strands.
  6. When you are ready to change colors, just tie the end of your new color to the last bit of the previous color and continue along with your weaving.
  7. When you have finished your masterpiece, cut loose the loops that you formed your web and tie them together in pairs to stop your weaving from unraveling.
