Activity Overview

Located in northeast Oakland County, Michigan, the Paint Creek Trail was the first rail-to-trail in this state. Dating back to the end of the 19th century, the rail was used to transports farm products and remained in use for almost a century. The trail was built in the 1980s after the abandonment of the railroad.

Paint Creek Trail is 8.9 miles long and most of it is surfaced with crushed limestone. The trail is perfect for mountain biking or walking, but is not suitable for skateboards and rollerblades. The trail is not very abrupt, mostly having a slope of 2%. This makes it suitable for everyone, including children.

Things to Do

  • The trail is an excellent route for a family day out with the bikes.
  • If you have a horse, you can ride it here, as horses are allowed on the Paint Creek Trail in certain areas.
  • Join the Friends of the Paint Creek Trail, which is a free group that provides regular support for the trail.
