Activity Overview

Roam the three floors of Rhode Island's Old State House on your own with a handwritten guide from the Visitor's Center or take one of the guided tours offered at the top of each hour, Monday through Friday, between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Highlights of this impressive building include the Bell Room, which houses Rhode Island's replica of the Philadelphia Liberty Bell; the State Room, which contains a famous portrait of George Washington; and the Civil War cannon that lies in the lobby and was in use at the battle of Gettysburg.

Things to Do

  • Admire the decorative ceiling artwork as you look up at the fourth largest, free-standing, marble dome in the world.
  • Peer into the House and Senate chambers and ornate receiving room. The marble bathrooms are also worthy of attention.
  • Inspect the original charter for Rhode Island found in the State House's small museum.
