Octopus Tag

Share:

Playing games outside is so vitally important for kids.  So much goes on when playing group games like this one.  We love this game of tag because it's a cross between red rover and tag and it's a lot of fun!

Directions for Octopus Tag

  1. First get some clothes and/or hats to delineate an ocean in your yard.
  2. Next, set up the clothes or hats in two lines as far apart as kids that are playing when they're standing holding hands.
  3. All players (the fish) line up at one end and one player (the octopus) stands in the middle of the space and yells out: "I am the octopus, queen/king of all motion. Let's see if you can cross my ocean."
  4. The fish try to run or sneak across the ocean as the octopus tries to tag them.
  5. If tagged, they become seaweed. Keeping one foot planted, the seaweed try to reach out and tag the other fish running by, thus turning those players into seaweed too.
  6. When the fish do reach the other side successfully, they start to try to cross again once the octopus and seaweed say their chant again.
  7. The game continues until all the fish become seaweed. The last fish tagged becomes the new octopus.

Have fun with it! Let us know if you have played this game.  Was it a hit with your kids?
