Activity Overview

The National Gallery of Art is a public art museum located in Washington, D.C. on the National Mall. This free art museum contains an impressive collection of paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, and prints from all over the world. Some of its most important works were created by artists that include Leonardo da Vinci, El Greco, Raphael, Manet, van Gogh, Monet, Picasso, Matisse, and Whistler. If its many cultural artifacts don't entice you to visit, the museum is also known for its popular ice rink that is open to the public each winter.

Things to Do

  • Explore the collections with your family - everyone is sure to find at least a few pieces that interest them due to the diverse nature of the artwork in the museum. The upper level is paintings and portraits, and the lower level showcases lots of great sculptures.
  • Take the elevator down to the Cascade Cafe - you'll be treated to a pretty waterfall, a large cafe with lots of seating and options and a large gift shop. This is also the underground passage between the east and west galleries.
  • Grab a family guide (written especially for kids) at one of the information booths. Helps explain the art and make the visit more kid-friendly.
  • Go ice skating at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden Ice Rink, which is open each year between November and March.
  • Attend a free family workshop, where children between 8 and 11 and their parents can learn about art and create their own pieces.

National Gallery of Art Insider Tips

  • Save money by taking public transportation to the National Gallery of Art instead of paying for parking - the nearest Metrorail stops are Judiciary Square, Smithsonian, and Archives-Penn Quarter-Navy Memorial.
  • Don't forget to stop by one of the museum's shops to pick up a souvenir before you leave! There is a general museum shop, a bookstore, and a special children's shop filled with books, toys, and puzzles.
  • Check out the museum's free family resources, including apps, audio tours, and booklets you can use in order to make your museum visit even more exciting and educational for your child.
  • Wheelchairs and little strollers are available in the coat check area.
