Activity Overview

Owned by one of the wealthiest families in Charleston in 1808, the neoclassical mansion embodies the lifestyle of the rich families during the era. Nathaniel Russell was a merchant who earned from cargo shipping and export. The mansion is made from bricks, surrounded by a garden in front and a 2-story slave house at the back. The house has been restored, adorned with period pieces, and named as a National Historic Landmark in 1973.

Things to Do

  • Schedule a visit and join a guided tour of the mansion. The tour guide is very knowledgeable and will give plenty of informative details about the house, its history, and its owners. A quick visit of the garden is also included in the guided tour. Note that picture-taking is not allowed inside the house.
  • Take time to indulge in the bright and airy ambiance of the house, mainly brought by the wide spaces and high ceiling. The tour guide explains how the house was built and also elaborates the function of each room.
  • The mansion itself is an architectural wonder. Visitors are amazed by the spectacular free-flying spiral staircase. The intricate woodwork, mantel pieces, and carvings are works of a fine craftsman.
