Activity Overview

Housed in a historic armory built in 1838, the Museum of the Artillery Company of Newport contains an extensive array of historic artifacts including military uniforms from 50 different nations, an impressive cache of cannons, personal items from several generals, a portrait of George Washington, and a letter penned by our first president.

Also on display in the museum are numerous pieces from the Artillery Company of Newport's 261 years of service to Rhode Island. The Artillery Company was chartered in 1741 by the Rhode Island General Assembly when our country was still under British rule and has served in every war fought by the United States.

Things to Do

  • Make sure to look for the uniforms of such notables as General Colin Powell, President Anwar Sadat of Egypt, and King Hussein of Jordan.
  • Admire four bronze cannons from 1798 cast by Paul Revere in his Boston-based foundry and also three original cannons from the Civil War, one from World War I and two from World War II.
