Activity Overview

Get a glimpse of the Carolina night skies or spend an exciting Family Science Day at the Morehead Planetarium. One of the largest planetariums in the United States, the Morehead Planetarium has been providing the public with the opportunity to discover the mysteries of the skies since 1949. The planetarium features two different projection systems and seats about 240 people.

Multiple programs for children are available at the Morehead Planetarium. These include the Star Families program, where children between 7 and 12 can explore astronomy accompanied by their families, the Middle School Science Club where middle schoolers can meet real scientists, do hands-on experiments, and take exciting field trips.

Things to Do

  • Take part in the free skywatching sessions that take place at the Morehead Planetarium every month. These give the entire family the chance to observe the stars, nebulae, moons, and other celestial objects.
  • Ask real astronomers any questions you might have about particular celestial objects or astronomy in general.
  • Various shows are available at the Morehead Planetarium, with the Black Holes show being one of the most popular.
