Activity Overview

This is one of the most iconic structures in Detroit. Known to tourists as the biggest fist bump photo opportunity, the Monument to Joe Louis named as "The Fist" is an eye-catching sculpture built to commemorate the strength of Joe Louis, both in his punches inside the ring and in his fight against racial injustice. The 24-ft long sculpture suspended mid-air in a pyramid structure was first installed in 1986.

Things to Do

  • If you are downtown near the riverfront area, drop by and see "The Fist" up close. Grab your mobile phones or cameras and take creative fist bump photos. If you are joining a tour group, the guide will inform you about the sculpture's history and the recent events involving it.
  • Make this a quick stop if you are in the downtown area. You can also add this to your itinerary if you are visiting the historic buildings in the area. Several monuments surround The Fist too so you can also explore and check those out.
  • Head on next to the Detroit Riverfront and enjoy an afternoon stroll on the boardwalk. You will also find several shops and restaurants near The Fist so you can take the family for snacks or an early dinner.
