Activity Overview

Montour Trail is one of the best rail trails in Pittsburgh stretching 46 miles between Coraopolis to Clairton. The trail follows the old Montour Railroad running along the creek. Share the trail with cyclists, joggers, and skiers in the winter. There are plenty of convenient access points and parking along the trail. Trailside amenities include water fountains and portable toilets every couple of miles.

Things to Do

  • Bring your kids and your pets on a beautiful day and go for a walk. The trail is mostly flat and the surface is made from crushed limestone which makes it great for walking and running.
  • Enjoy the scenery. Aside from the stunning landscape views especially in fall, you'll find different areas of interest. If you are going to bike the entire stretch, you'll pass by three tunnels (Enlow, National, and Greer Tunnels). The favorite of most cyclists is the McDonald Viaduct spanning 900-ft long and with views of trees.
  • Pitch a tent at the campsites along Cecil Henderson or Boggs road, available for overnight use only. Campsites are equipped with water fountains, picnic tables, campfire rings, and portable toilets.
  • Join clean-up events and help maintain the trail.

Montour Trail Insider Tips

  • Pack lunch, bring lots of water, and wear sunscreen.
  • Study the trail map before going. Some of the trail area have no signages and mile markers.
