Activity Overview

Octopuses, sharks, and thousands of tropical fish are just some of the attractions the entire family can enjoy at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Other sea life exhibits include jellyfish, sea otters, stingrays, yellowfin tuna, and more. The Aquarium offers a selection of daily shows and feedings that allow children to learn more about the fish and even feed them, too.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is located just a couple of minutes from Carmel and Pebble Beach, at the west end of historic Cannery Row. You can reach the aquarium easily by car or public transportation. There is no free parking available, but you can park your car at one of the pay parking garages near the Aquarium.

Things to Do

  • Visit the "Deep Ocean" exhibition, which is spectacular for its absence of plant life.
  • Join other visitors and staff in the Open Sea Feeding, which allows you to see how fish and other sea life creatures are fed. Kids can also learn about the roles of the animals in their original habitats.
  • Watch some of the films about sea life in the Auditorium of the Aquarium to find out more about they way the staff of the Aquarium cares for more than 40,000 animals and plants.

Monterey Bay Aquarium Insider Tips

  • Sometimes you can watch scuba divers cleaning and maintaining the big tanks.
  • The Aquarium has a cafe that has a variety of refreshments.
  • The Aquarium is quite large, so be prepared to spend at least a couple of hours there.
