Activity Overview

Mission Bay Park is the largest man-made aquatic park in the country. This massive space spans over 4,235 acres, and is made up of 46% land and 54% water. Mission Bay Park was developed from the 1940's through the 1960's. In 1944 it was decided that Mission Bay was to be turned into a tourist and recreational center in order to increase tourism and diversify the City's economy.The Park consists of 27 miles of shoreline, many walking trails and bike paths, and 19 miles of sandy beaches with 8 designated swimming locations. With so many activities to choose from, Mission Bay Park has fun for everyone in the family!

Things to Do

  • Popular available activities are wind surfing, jet skiing, boating, camping, surfing, kayaking, boogie boarding, swimming and sun bathing.
  • Crown Point is a favorite spot for volleyball games.
  • Many basketball courts are available.
  • Go fishing in designated areas.
  • Take a self guided tour of wildlife preserves.
  • Mission Bay Park is home to many rare and endangered bird species, so bird watching is a must.
  • Santa Clara Point has an excellent Aquatic Center, offering water sports rentals and instruction.
  • Rent sailboats and motor boats.
  • Many paths for walking, jogging, rollerblading and biking.
  • East Mission Bay Park with its information center, endless grass parks, playgrounds and boat launching ramp. A great place for a picnic!
  • In the middle of Mission Beach you will find an amusement park and retail area called Belmont Park.
  • Check out Fiesta Island and Fanuel Park playground!
  • Take a moonlight cruise around the bay on the Bahia Belle, a Mississippi-style riverboat docked at the Catamaran Resort.

Mission Bay Park Insider Tips

  • Be very aware of postings regarding dogs. The are some parts where dogs are prohibited, other areas where dogs are allowed, but must be leased. Fiesta Island is actually leash free!
  • Fishing is prohibited from any bridge.
  • Ocean facing beaches tend to be the most populated.
  • Trails near the Visitors Center on the east side can be crowded.
  • Public showers and restrooms are available.
  • Parking is free throughout Mission Bay, but come early in the summer as the lots fill up quick.
  • There is no life guard supervision October - March and limited supervision the rest of the year.
