Activity Overview

The Michael C. Carlos Museum can trace its roots back to the 1870s. Over its long history it has developed an impressive collection of art works that spans continents and epochs. There is art work from Asia, Africa and Latin America as well as from Ancient Greece and Rome. They run numerous events throughout the year and often host guest exhibitions to supplement their permanent collection.

Things to Do

  • The Museum regularly updates its exhibitions so go online to see what is on display now and what will be coming up soon. Artworks of Native Americans from Mexico, an exploration of the story of Genesis and a showing of a tablet that is likely the source for the story of Noah and his ark make up the current exhibitions.
  • There are free public tours of the Museum on offer at 2:00 pm every Sunday. Group tours of ten or more can be organized by appointment. Museum Moments Tours are organized especially for people with mild cognitive impairment, dementia or those who are in the early stages of Alzheimer's. These tours must be scheduled in advance.
  • Two audio tours the Highlights of the Collection Tour and Times and Texts of the Bible audio Tour are both available for rental for a fee of $2. Fifty minute school tours take place three times a day from Tuesday through to Friday. The cost for the student tours start at $6 per student.
  • The new Artful Stories program invites preschool children to hear a story surrounded by Egyptian, Greek and Roman, ancient American, Asian or African art before looking closely and discussing related works of art, and then transitioning to the studio for a hands on activity.
  • The museum also offers special programs for homeschool kids & families.
