Activity Overview

Create this beautiful rainbow inspired Melted Crayon Art project. This is such a simple project and takes little time to assemble and carry out the process. This is a great project for school ages children and teens and makes a vibrant and beautiful piece of art.

Since heat is involved, adult supervision is recommended. Normally this project is not a messy one but it is always a good idea to lay down a drop cloth or newspaper as dripping wax could get messy. If you angle your canvas, this should not be a problem, however.

Materials Needed

  • Box of 64 Crayons and some extra crayon color favorites
  • A canvas
  • A Glue Gun
  • Glue Sticks
  • A Hairdryer

How to Make It

  1. Sort a box of 64 crayons by color, keeping the rainbow hues and setting aside the blacks and the browns.
  2. Use your glue gun to glue each crayon to the canvas top with the points facing downward. We arranged them in rainbow order. Different shades of a color group only add to the beauty of this project. The crayons should be lined up in one long strip across the top of your canvas.
  3. Turn your hairdryer to a high heat setting and blow the hot air at the crayons. Within a few minutes, the crayon wax will start to get shiny and they will start to melt and drip down the canvas.
