Activity Overview

History is not only written in books, but is also evident in the way that the world has evolved. The Mcclung Museum, located inside the University of Tennessee, features exhibits about archeology, geology, anthropology, and natural history. A trip here will enable you and your family to learn about the history of Tennessee as told through fossils, the early human origins, and the roots of the native people of the state.

Things to Do

  • Come and visit with the family, preferably on a weekday to avoid the crowds. Admission is free. Explore the exhibits that showcase permanent collections such as the fossils of a duck-billed dinosaur, the geology of Tennessee, the human evolution, and archaeological artifacts pertaining to the Civil War. Informative videos are shown in the exhibits, take the time to watch with the kids. Don't forget to see the ongoing special exhibits too.
  • Join events organized by the museum. They hold a regular Family Fun Day too with different themes each time. Visit the museum''s event page for the schedules.
  • End your tour with a visit to the Museum Store. There are plenty of great finds here such as books, jewelry, and artworks, all locally made in the state.
