Activity Overview

This food science experiment is a simple and child friendly way of creating your own butter. Set the kids up with this activity while you are making dinner and the family will delight that they were able to contribute fresh butter to the meal. Since this experiment requires 10-15 minutes of constant shaking, it is best done with at least one partner. It is sure to produce a great arm workout as well.

Materials Needed

  • A jar with a lid
  • Salt
  • Heavy whipping cream
  • Paper towel

How to Do It

  1. Fill a clean jar about half full of heavy whipping cream.
  2. Add a pinch of salt for taste.
  3. Screw on the lid and shake the jar for 10-15 minutes.
  4. After this time, the cream will separate into a solid and a liquid.
  5. Remove the lump of solid from the jar and blot it on a paper towel to remove any excess moisture. You may even be able to wrap the paper towel around and squeeze the excess out.
  6. Your butter is now ready to taste and use. Store in an airtight container in your refrigerator.
