Activity Overview

Create magical memories that will last when you create your own precious stepping stones. Time flies by so quickly and so many times we have such good intentions on preserving the moments that are so fleeting. This is a fun and fairly easy craft that your whole family can get involved in. Preserve those growing hands and feet and personalize each stone with any small embellishments that you have on hand or collect. You may want to make this craft a yearly tradition. Kids will be amazed at how much their hands and feet have grown in the period of one short year.

Lay your finished stones in your garden bed or line a path with stepping stones that you will always treasure. We did these for our babies, toddlers, teens and adults and even the dog. These stepping stones also make fabulous gifts for family and friends.

Materials Needed

  • Plastic molds in various shapes found at craft stores or shallow cardboard boxes
  • 2 wooden paint stirrers
  • 8 cups of quick dry cement
  • A ruler
  • A bucket
  • 2 cups of water
  • cement dye if desired
  • A stick or popsicle stick
  • Seaglass, shells, stones etc.
  • Acrylic Paint

How to Make Them

  1. Slowly combine the powdered cement mixture and the water together in a bucket, stirring constantly with a paint stirrer. The mixture should be thick and pourable. You may need a little more or a little less of each ingredient, so mix carefully to achieve the desired consistency.
  2. Pour the cement mixture into the mold or the box until it is about 2 inches thick.
  3. Take the other paint stirrer and hold it on its side. Scrape the stirrer across the surface of the cement until it is smooth.
  4. Allow the cement to set for 4-5 minutes.
  5. Place your hands, feet or both onto the surface of the cement and press down firmly and evenly about 1 inch.
  6. Rinse hands and feet immediately and thoroughly with water.
  7. Use a stick or popsicle stick to write a name or dates in the cement.
  8. Add stones, decorative glass, tile, shells etc. if desired. Press them firmly into the surface of the cement.
  9. Allow the cement to dry for 48 hours.
  10. Carefully pop the cement out of the plastic mold or tear cardboard away from the cement.
  11. Place in your garden, give as a gift or create a memorable pathway.
