Activity Overview

Sometimes artists need a little bit of inspiration when it comes to drawing. I like to keep a small box of what I like to call Magazine Starter Art on hand. This box contains parts of photos or pictures that have been cut out from magazines or printed out. There might be the head of an elephant or a partial family photo just waiting for a little artist to use their creativity to finish the drawing. I am always enlightened by what the little artists in my home come up with as they create their own masterpieces.

Materials Needed

  • Magazine or printed photo
  • paper
  • glue stick
  • pencils, cray pas, colored pencils, markers ( your choice)

How to Make It

  1. Peruse some old magazines or online printables and cut out only a portion of each picture that you choose.
  2. Use your glue stick to glue the partial picture to your paper in the desired location. ( ie: obviously you wouldn't place a giraffe's head at the very bottom of your paper).
  3. Starting from that partial picture, draw how you think the rest of the objects and scenery or people should look. It is all how the artist interprets it.
  4. Artists can keep it simple or make it more detailed and ornate depending on age, skill and desire.
