Activity Overview
Gather some handy items that you have at home to create a beanbag tossing game. Create your own colorful bean bags and use a step ladder from the garage to create a cool backyard game that all of your family will enjoy. This game is great for all ages and even sneaks some Math practice in without the kids noticing.
Materials Needed
- A Step Ladder
- Cardboard or card stock
- Duck Tape
- Markers
- Beanbags ( If you don't have bean bags you can fill sandwich baggies with colored rice like we did.)
How to Make and Play
- To make easy beanbags, add rice to several plastic Ziploc baggies, put a few drops of food coloring in the baggies and seal and shake the bags until the rice is uniformly colored. Then seal the ziplock side with duck tape.
- Once your bean bags are made, have an adult set up a step ladder from the garage out in the backyard.
- Cut your 8.5 x11 sheets of card stock and cut them in half.
- Write numbers in ascending order with one number on each card. For example: 10, 20, 30 , 40, 50, 60 etc.
- Tape numbers in ascending order from the bottom rung to the top rung. You don't have to fill the whole ladder. Use your judgment.
- Create a starting line for tossing. You may want to make two if the whole family is playing. Little ones might need to be a little bit closer to the ladder than adults.
- Toss your colored bean bags through the ladder rungs, aiming for the highest amount of points that you can. Take turns and keep a tally of point values.
- The player with the highest point value wins.
- Continue the game in rounds and keep the kids adding higher and higher or reverse the rules to have the lowest tally of points be the winner.
