Kymulga Grist Mill & Covered Bridge

Activity Overview

The Kymulga Grist Mil and Covered Bridge offer a living access point back to Civil War times. The Grist Mill was built in 1864 for a Lieutenant Colonel of the Confederate Army and though almost all the grist mills of the time in the state were destroyed by the Union Army this one managed to survive. A short distance east of the mill is one of the few extant covered bridges from the same period in its original position in Alabama. Both are quaint but important reminders of the area's long history.

Things to Do

• These days both the Grist Mill and the Covered Bridge are open to tourists. Tours of the Grist Mill can be enjoyed from Wednesdays through to Sundays throughout the year. As part of the tour you will get the opportunity to watch live demonstrations of how they turn corn into meal. In fact this Mill is still in operation which means you can stop into their shop and pick up some products to take home with you!
• A walk through the Covered Bridge and around the area surrounding it is fascinating. The 105 feet bridge runs over the Talladega which itself is beautiful and leads to an old Native American trade route evidence of which can still be made out.
