Activity Overview
The Kancamagus Highway, or just regular Route 112 to the locals, is one of the most picturesque drives which the U.S.A has to offer. The area that is most renowned is actually a 34.5 mile section of Route 112's total length of 56.4 miles and is known to be best viewed in the Fall when the changing leaves give it an orange and yellow frame.
There are no big ugly gas stations lining the side of the road or sub-par restaurants distracting from the view; on Kancamagus Highway there is just you, the road and the beauty of nature for you to enjoy. A great route to get to family-friendly venues like North Conway, Bretton Woods, and Jefferson, NH.
Things to Do
- Though this drive is best enjoyed in the Fall it is perfectly scenic all year round. As you cut through the White Mountain National Forest make sure you keep your eyes peeled for views of the White Mountains themselves as well as the Swift River, the Sabbaday Falls, the Lower Falls and the Rocky Gorge.
- Don't think you have to drive straight through the Highway, if you enjoy the sights why not camp at one of the 6 campgrounds along the route. These grounds are open from mid-May until mid-October weather permitting thought they sometimes open for winter camping. Be warned that they are basic; none of the camps have electric, water or sewer trailer hook ups and only one, the Jigger Johnson Campground, has showers, which are coin operated.
- There are a good amount of trails that lead off the Highway into the spectacular trees that surround it. Take one of these on to get a more intimate view into the attractive nature of the area.
