Activity Overview

A 20 minute drive south from Louisville, Jefferson Memorial Forest is a timberland dedicated to veterans in the area and a treat for all who visit. The forest is filled with trails and running streams and offers a Welcome Center, conference center and outdoor recreational facilities surrounding a scenic lake.

The Forest, which encompasses nearly 6,500 acres and stretches across 10 miles from east to west, has been designated as an Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary.

Hiking trails abound and cater to all levels, with some trails that circle back to the campground before long for families hiking with young children and also a 10-mile loop for advanced hikers. Most trails are said to be moderately difficult.

Things to Do

  • Take the family to enjoy Tom Wallace Lake, which has a playground, picnic area and opportunities for fishing.
  • Camp overnight in the fresh air and listen for the surrounding wildlife.
  • Stop by the Welcome Center for maps, souvenirs, books, hiking supplies, snacks and rest rooms.
