Activity Overview

What began as a quaint lily pond in one of San Antonio's first rock and cement quarries has today evolved into a full-fledged Japanese Tea Garden, complete with nature trails, event space, koi ponds, and a waterfall. When you enter, you will pass through a beautiful stone pagoda that acts as the start of the nature trail across the park.

The Tea House at the entrance serves fresh tea and finger foods and is a fine place to sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery. Take your time through the park as you pass by the Japanese flora, enjoy the tranquil view of the koi fish and turtles in the many ponds, and don't hesitate to take a seat on one of the garden benches or enjoy a family picnic on the grounds.

The Japanese Tea Garden has undergone many renovations over the past few months, with brand new facilities and improved ponds and waterfalls. The space is available for event rental, including parties, weddings, and graduations. The gardens and the tea house remain open all year round, so be sure to visit this oasis just outside of downtown San Antonio no matter what time if year you plan your visit.

Things to Do

  • Jingu House Cafe: Enjoy tea and a light lunch menu at this newly-renovated facility located right outside the entrance of the gardens near the pagoda; Can be rented out for events after 4PM
  • The Waterfall: This intimate site can also be reserved for small gatherings and weddings, but you can also enjoy the view of it from the walking path as it passes right next to it.
  • Picnics: Take full advantage of the free admission and the grounds by packing a picnic lunch and finding a comfortable place to enjoy your food and your time together amid the calming sound of lily ponds and waterfalls

Japanese Tea Garden Insider Tips

  • While the entrance to the park is wheelchair accessible, the trail through the gardens is narrow and has a few short staircases to climb. Dress appropriately and comfortably as you will be doing quite a bit of walking inside the tea garden.
  • Parking at the Japanese Tea Garden can get full, so we recommend parking across the street near the zoo. You can hop an inexpensive train that will drop you off right at the garden's entrance, or you can take a short stroll through downtown San Antonio and reach the gardens at your leisure.
  • Pets are welcome, as long as they are on a leash at all times.
