Young budding archaeologists are certain to enjoy this fun and exciting Frozen Dinosaur Egg activity. These Iced Over Dinosaur Eggs are super easy to make and are sure to gain the interest of all children who are interested in these Prehistoric creatures.
To turn this fun project into an even more fun activity, try using a squirt bottle with salt water inside of it and some chopsticks to remove the ice from the dinosaur baby inside of the egg. Make a whole bunch of these at any time of year and keep the little ones occupied for hours as they perform this ice excavating technique to uncover the treasures within the frozen eggs.
Materials Needed
- Balloons
- Water
- Small Plastic Dinosaurs
- Food Coloring
- Freezer
- salt
- paintbrushes or spoons
How to Make Them
- Stretch the mouth of an uninflated balloon around a small plastic dinosaur.
- Work it around gently so as not to break the balloon, but get the plastic dinosaur inside of the balloon.
- Add water or water mixed with food coloring to the balloon.
- Tie off the balloon and place it in the freezer overnight.
- Remove from the freezer and snip off the tied end of the balloon and peel away the rest of the latex.
- You should now have an icy dinosaur egg perfect for ice excavation!
- Place icy egg in a bowl.
- Give your child a bowl of very salty water and some paintbrushes and spoons.
- As they paint the egg, the ice will melt away uncovering the plastic dinosaurs inside!
