Activity Overview

The Hollywood Reservoir, also known as Lake Hollywood, is a reservoir created by the Mulholland Dam. It is a popular Los Angeles attraction due to the spectacular views the area provides of the Hollywood Sign. It is also known for its beautiful lakeside trail where visitors often encounter wildlife like deer, squirrels, and hawks.

Whether you're interested in a short family hike in the great outdoors or taking photos of famous Los Angeles landmarks, you're sure to enjoy a short trip to the Hollywood Reservoir.

Things to Do

  • Have a picnic or a barbecue in Lake Hollywood Park, which overlooks Lake Hollywood. In addition to providing picnic tables and grills for public use, the park has a fun play area for kids and provides amazing views of the surrounding area.
  • Get a bit of exercise by going for a family hike, walk, or jog around the Hollywood Reservoir. There is a 3.5-mile loop that features stunning views of Lake Hollywood and the Hollywood Sign, particularly from Canyon Lake Drive.
  • Take a photo of the famous Hollywood Sign, one of Los Angeles' most famous landmarks. The 45-foot tall letters were originally created in the 1920s to advertise area real estate, but over the years it has become one of America's most famous cultural landmarks due to its frequent use in films.

Hollywood Reservoir Insider Tips

  • If you're wanting to cycle around the Hollywood Reservoir, use the paved road that encircles the reservoir for a smoother ride.
  • Not sure where to park? There's often space on Lake Hollywood Drive near the gated entrance to the reservoir.
  • Don't be tempted to bring your dog along on your family excursion - dogs are not allowed into the reservoir area since it is part of the city's water storage and supply system.
  • Visit nearby Griffith Park, the largest park in Los Angeles, for even more nature sightseeing. Family-friendly activities you can do at the park include swimming, horseback riding, jogging, camping, and playing tennis.
