Activity Overview

The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts & Culture id dedicated to preserving instances of excellence in the arts, culture and history of African Americans. They provide a showcase for how black American culture has influenced the culture of the United States as a whole. Its focus is not only on the past however as the Gantt Center also serves as a point of focus for music, dance, theatre, visual art, film, education , literature and community outreach programs in the greater Charlotte community.

Things to Do

• The John and Vivian Hewitt Collection of African-American Art serves as the cornerstone of the Gantt Center's impressive art collection. John and Vivian Hewitt were never rich but over the course of about forty years added to their collection one by one works of art by prominent African American artists, many of whom became their friends. The full collection is currently being displayed in its entirety at the Center.
• The Gantt Center runs educational programs for all ages. For families and young children the Family First program invites families to come experience and discuss art, dance and music together. The Jr. Studio pairs families and their children with contemporary artists for intensive art-making workshops.
