Activity Overview

Hamilton Pool Preserve is one of Texas' oldest and most popular swimming holes. During the peak of summer, weather permitting, the green-blue water of the spring can be a welcoming refreshment. The pool water rarely gets warmer than 70 degrees, making it the best way to cool down in the middle of August. The waterfall that creates the pool is a must-see, even though it can shrink to a trickle during periods of drought. Families can enjoy picnics and hiking around the pool, with paths that explore the historic lands that once belonged to Native Americans and the first Texas settlers.

Things to Do

  • 50ft Waterfall & Cavern: When the underground river collapsed, it created a massive waterfall that filled the swimming hole; Take a refreshing swim in the pool and visit the cavern behind the falls for picturesque photo ops.
  • Bird Watching: Hamilton Pool Preserve is home for a great many species of birds, including the native Golden Cheek Warbler; Take a stroll around the pool or down one of the park's paths and make note of the different species you see - bring your binoculars!
  • Hiking: The path around Hamilton Pool stretches 4 miles in length, taking hikers around the pool, through the cavern, and around the stretch of the river; Wear sturdy shoes and bring lots of water and bug spray along with you

Hamilton Pool Insider Tips

  • Although Hamilton Pool is closed for most of the fall and winter season, Travis County does offer guided tours through the trails and will often open up the trails to the public if the weather is especially mild.
  • During the summer the park can be very crowded, so be prepared to wait in line for upwards of an hour. Regular guests to the preserve recommend visiting the pool on cooler summer afternoons, or later in the evening while everyone else is heading home for dinner.
