Activity Overview
Grow your very own ice tower instantaneously before your eyes. Children of all ages will enjoy the magic of science unfolding right before their eyes with the Growing Ice Experiment. This experiment takes a little bit of monitored preparation but is well worth the wait. The one water that you pour on the ice cubes will adhere to the cubes and almost magically form an ice sculpture of sorts.
Materials Needed
- A cup of ice
- 6 bottles of water
- Freezer to lay bottles spaced and flat
How to Do It
- First take your 6 water bottles and place them on their sides with a slight space between them on a freezer shelf.
- Periodically check the water bottles after 1 hour and 30 minutes to ensure that none of the bottles have frozen yet. You will want to carefully remove the bottles right before their freezing point. For us, it took 2 and a half hours.
- Fill a cup with ice.
- Open each one of the bottles and gently and slowly pour the water on top of the ice cubes in the cup. The water should instantly freeze and adhere to the ice cubes in the cup. If this does not happen, the water was not cold enough. Place them back in the freezer for a while longer.
