Activity Overview
The Griffith Observatory has been a free L.A attraction ever since it opened in 1935. Today it offers a wealth of activities and resources for all the public. Families can catch a show at the Samuel Oschin Planetarium, look into the sky yourself with one of the Observatory's public telescopes, take part in a program at the Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon presentation theatre or learn from one of their numerous exhibits.
Things to Do
- The 290-seater Samuel Oschin Planetarium is still the Observatory's principal attraction. It currently offers four live shows that focus on different subjects such as the search for water and other forms of life throughout the Universe and Light of the Valkyries which explores the natural wonder of the Northern Lights. There is a fee to see a show at the Planetarium.
- Almost all of the programs at the Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon presentation theatre are free. The Once and Future Griffith Observatory explores the history of this magnificent building and what it has offered the residents of Los Angeles for many years before exploring what the future holds.
- All Space Considered takes place on the first Friday of every month and will bring attendees up to date on what is happening today in the world of space science and astronomy.
Griffith Observatory Insider Tips
- Along with the free admission a limited amount of free parking is also provided at the Observatory. There is also free Wi-Fi!
- The Museum is closed on Mondays. It opens a couple of hours earlier on Saturdays and Sundays than during the week.
