Activity Overview

Step back in time to the Victorian era as you tour the well-preserved, 19th-century estate of the Lippitt family, prominent politicians and civic leaders in the state of Rhode Island for many years.

Built in 1865, this home was occupied by former Rhode Island Governor Henry Lippitt, his wife and their six children, several of whom became leaders in their own right, serving as Governor, Senator and Founder of the Providence chapter of the American Red Cross.

Descendants of the Lippitt family include the current Governor of Rhode Island, Lincoln Chafee, who also served as a U.S. Senator, and his father, John Chafee, a former U.S. Senator and Governor of Rhode Island.
